Global Warming Threatening Agriculture
Hundreds of SPI South Sumatera members attending public dialogue that was held with the theme “The Impact of Climate Change and Global Warming towards the Future of Earth and Agriculture.” This public dialogue was held as part of Earth Day commemoration held in Hotel Anida, Palembang.
According to SPI General Chairman, Henry Saragih, the impact of global warming already felt in agriculture. One of the impacts is the change in cultivating season. “These past few years we realize there is a drastic weather changes, there has been a shift in rainy season and dry season,” Henry said.
Rahman, the new chairman of South Sumatera SPI, add that the shifting of the season has influence the changes in the pattern and ways of cultivating system since most of the farmers are force to adjust with the weather changes. Hence, often the farm production is not maximal.
”Climate change influence the way of cultivating also the harvest not to mention the problem of land and water pollution and rapid conversion of agricultural land. In this momentum, we would like to call everyone to work together to save the earth,” said Rahman further.
This Earth Day public dialogue is attended as well by environment activist, student, academician as well as journalist from various mass media. The members of SPI come from four districts in South Sumatera namely, Palembang, Banyuasin, Ogan Komering Ilir, and Ogan Ilir.
